Story of Maa Shailputri
The word Shailputri is a Sanskrit word, which means 'daughter of the mountain'. According to the mythology mentioned in Hindu scriptures, Lord Shiva was married to Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. After their marriage, Daksha Prajapati organized a huge Yagya. In that Yagya, Daksha invited all his daughters and gods and goddesses but did not send the invitation to Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati.
When Goddess Sati expressed her desire to go to her father's Yagya, Lord Shiva explained to her that it is not appropriate to go there without invitation. Then Goddess Sati said that it is my father's house, and being a daughter, I have no objection to going there. And in front of his stubbornness, Lord Shiva was compelled and he sent his Ganas along with Goddess Sati. When Goddess Sati reached there, she had to face humiliation there and when her father Daksha insulted Lord Shiva, she got angry and burnt herself in the fire of the same Yagya.
When Bholenath came to know about Mata Sati entering the fire, he got angry and sent Virbhadra to destroy the Yagya. Veerabhadra destroyed the whole Yagya after reaching the yajna and cut off the head of Daksha Prajapati and put it in the fire of the same Yagya. This Goddess Sati was reborn in the form of Shailputri under Himalaya Raj Havant. Thus Maa Shailputri was goddess Sati in her previous birth.
